About this Site

Parts of Bitton records and other nearby parishes are being extracted and/or transcribed by Clare and Marsha and checked by our willing helpers. This helps in building up a picture of our ancestors and their lives and we hope that it will become a resource for other family history researchers.

We began to construct the site based on these records. During the process it evolved and now also includes what we hope will be a developing Family section for all of us with Bitton area families.

If you are seeking information about Bitton and surrounding areas, we would suggest that you visit the Genuki site (GENeaology of the United Kingdom and Ireland). For Bitton, we would direct you first to the Gloucestershire and Somerset county sections. You'll find maps, parish information, links, etc. that we are still learning of and cannot possibly explain adequately. If you visit Streetmap and type in 'Bitton', you will see a map which includes many of the areas named in these pages.

We hope you enjoy reading this information as much as we enjoyed finding it. And, we welcome you to join us as we continue.

Parishes

Bitton is a parish that lies between Bristol and Bath, along the River Avon. Although in Gloucestershire (GLS), it is very near the Somerset (SOM) border and our families (and probably yours) are found in both counties. We started this site with pages for each of these counties, and have created an Other Parishes section for our families in other locations. St. Mary, Bitton, GLS is our first parish, which you can reach by selecting Bitton on the GLS Parish page.

The extractions and transcriptions are not a complete listing of all entries, except for some limited time periods. Each Parish page will have an explanation of the source documents, the dates of the materials included and state whether they are extractions or transcriptions.

All transcriptions are being checked to ensure accuracy, but this cannot be guaranteed and there may well be typing or transcription errors; many of the pages are quite faded. You are advised to check original documents held by the relevant Records Office, Family History Society, or your local LDS Family History Center. Please see our Links section for further information.

Search (Database)

Marsha is entering all the extractions and transcriptions into a database. From this, a special online database has been constructed to be used on the website. It can be searched and also sorted. Be sure to select the 'View' link for additional details. In order to allow sorting by date, Unknown months are entered as 13, Unknown years and days are entered as 00.

Most entries will be found under Christenings/Baptisms, Marriages and Burials. Links for Births and Deaths have been created for use as/if we have that information. We hope to also add other types/categories of information as we proceed.

The database can be accesed directly via the main Search link or the parish pages.

Other Information

We are finding additional information and documents that relate to our families. They are items such as: Land tax documents, wills, etc. We're also learning about our ancestors' work, which for us involves the local copper and brass industries. We hope that this section of the site will provide a place to add some of this information over time.

Families

As we learn of our families, we're also learning of the families they married, were neighbors of, worked with, etc. We each and collectively have learned much by sharing with others we have come in contact with in our explorations.

This section has a link to a Researchers page, with a hopefully growing list of fellow Bitton-area researchers. It also has a list of Bitton family names, each linked to a Name Page. Each Name Page has a general Overview/description of the family, followed by a Researchers section, where individuals can present more details of various family branches.

This section also has a link to a Wills section, which contains a master index, by name, of wills that are posted. Click on the names for an index of all wills for a particular name. Click on the name to access the transcriptions. Wills for particular families are also linked from the Name Page. A similar structure will guide you to Settlement and Removal Documents.

Please let us know if you would like to be included here.
