'Settlement Examination of James THOMPSON the Elder, coppersmith of the hamlet of Bitton, Co. Glos, dated 1768 Nov 9, who says that he was born in the parish of Mecham in the County of Surrey, as he has been informed. That about 13 years ago he lived in the parish of North Stoke, Co. Somerset where he worked and occupied an Estate of £19 a year for one year. That 28 years ago he was married to his late wife whose name was Elizabeth THOMPSON in Bitton parish church, by whom he has now living with him in the said hamlet the following children namely William aged 26 years who is married and had gained a settlement of himself in Bitton hamlet by being bound Apprentice to this Examinant for 7 years, James aged 24 years who lived with this Examinant in North Stoke parish whilst he rented the said Estate, and his said son is now married, John aged 21 years who has gained a settlement in Saltford parish, Co. Somerset by being bound Apprentice for 7 years to William ALLEN cabinet maker there, Ann aged about 16 years, who likewise lived with the Examinant at North Stoke, Mary aged 13 years who was born in North Stoke, Elizabeth aged about 10 years who was born in the said hamlet of Bitton..'
