by MarshaThe most exciting new discovery, as of April 2008, after nearly 40 years of searching, is learning that the wife of our elusive William MEERE was Mary, nee CANTER!
"William MEERE. Yeoman, and Mary CANTER, Spinster, were married, by licence, on 25th. July 1754 at Winterbourne, GLS. Both were of the parish."

We are descended from the only known son of abt 1716 William MEERE/Mary nee CANTER, William [jr] bap Sep 1754, Mangotsfield. While Wm [Sr] was buried there in 1793, Mary and two spinster daughters are buried in the churchyard of St. Peter's, Dyrham. It is the family of 1754 William (and his spinster sisters) who migrated to Bitton abt 1802.
From Mangotsfield Parish Records and MIs, we are beginning to learn of Mary's CANTER family.
Our earliest documentation is the 1722 Apr 3 marriage of abt 1700 Thomas CANTER and abt 1693 Hester JONES. Their births are calculated from their ages at death and per Bigland MIs, Mangotsfield (on headstones): Thomas CANTER died 19 Nov 1761 aged 61; Hester his wife died 14 Jul 1768 aged 75. No baptisms for Thomas or Hester have yet been found, but the search is still new. Thus, we do not know how or if we connect to other CANTER lines.
