At a Perambulation of the Manor of Dyrham and Hinton by order of William
Blathwayt, Esq., Lord of the Manor, begun the 2nd October 1792 after
due notice being given.

We begin our perambulation at the end of Bacon Lane and crossing the Turnpike
Road leading from the Crosshands in the parish of Old Sodbury to the city of
Bath we proceeded down Glass Lands Lane, against which the boundary of Tolldown
Tything belonging to William BLATHWAYT in possession of the said Wm.
MEERS, within this Manor and leaving the said Lane in Tormarton, we turned
to the right after the said Tolldown and against lands in Tormarton belonging
to His Grace the Duke of Beaufort to the Turnpike Road leading from the City of
Bristol to Chippenham in the County of Wilts (the said bounds from Glass Lands
Lane to this place much out of repair) and crossing the said Turnpike Road to
the corner of Tolldown Paddock, also belonging to the said W BLATHWAYT & in possession of said Wm. MEERS against Lands in Tormarton
belonging to the said Duke of Beaufort to the boundary walls of Wm.
[HELLMER's] in West Littleton parish from thence to the eleven acres at
Toldown belonging to the said Wm. BLATHWAYT, in the possession of the
said Wm. MEERS and after the wall to late TYLERS Toldown also
belonging to the said Wm. B. and in possession of John BRITTAIN;
and after the wall to Dirham Upper Field against said [Wm./Nath.]
[HELLMER's] Lands in West Littleton and down after said Wall [about]
beyonds to the corner. Then leaving said wall, we went down the field to the
road [...] from Hinton to Marshfield through Littleton, and turning to the
right in about 20 yards after said road, we turned to the left against said
road down to the hedge about 40 yards from the corner called Dunswall Corner,
and then turning to the right after said hedge and against the said Wm.
HELMER's lands we went over into Dunsdown belonging to said W BLATHWAYT & in the tenure of said Wm MEERS & after the hedge over into [Stephen?]
TOGHILL's Dunsdown, and after the hedge by Fishers lands in West Littleton
and into Dirham Upper Field here turning to the left after said Fishers lands
in Littleton aforesaid to the Common Field called [Whitford/Whitfield] in
Littleton aforesaid; and after said hedge against lands late belonging to Samuel
NORTH deceased, when we turned to the right and went to the corner of the
Turnpike Road aforesaid leading to Bath, and leaving said road in Dirham, we turned
to the left and went against said NORTH's lands into Dirham Whitfield.
And after the wall against said lands called the Wood Grounds belonging to said W.B. in the tenure of John [SIVELL?] in the said parish of West
Littleton against Littleton Wood, belonging to and in possession of said Wm.
BLATHWAYT, to the Turnpike Gate called Old Field Gate on the said Bath
Road, and through said Gate after the wood to the gate at Old Field Lane end,
where Marshfield Parish begins.
And crossing said Lane and keeping after the boundary wall of lands of Christopher
CODRINGTON Esqr., to the corner where formerly a gate stood, then crossing
the Turnpike Road to the corner of Upper Park also belonging to the said Wm.
BLATHWAYT and in the possession of John BRITAIN. And keeping after
said wall leaving the Old Bath Road in Marshfield Parish, we proceeded by the
Upper Park wall against Old Field Sheep [Slait?] belonging to Christopher
CODRINGTON, Esq., and keeping after said wall we went in through the gate
to the Turks Ground, belonging and in the possession of the said Wm.
BLATHWAYT to the Gate crossing the Old Bath Road, where the parish of Cold
Ashton begins and keeping against [Him?] Common field in that parish to the
hedge leaving the said Old Bath Road to the left, we went into Butlers Grounds
in the tenure of the [W?] TOGHILL also belonging to the said William
BLATHWAYT and over into Butlers pasture ground in the tenure of said [W.]
TOGHILL and belonging to the said W.B.; to [Gore?] LANGTON Esqrs lands, we turned to the right and left the Old Bath road and kept against said
lands to the hedge, where the parish of Doynton begins and keeping after the
hedge against said lands of the late Mr Toby WALKER in that parish and
into the Glebe lands of Doynton and lands belonging to [Gore?] LANGTON Esqr. Over the wall into Lower Butlers Grounds belonging to the said W.B. and
in possession of the said [W.] TOGHILL and keeping after the boundary of
the said Glebe and [Gore?] LANGTON's lands we turned to the right in
about 20 yards and went over into Smarts Meads belonging to the said W.B. and in the tenure of the said [W.] TOGHILL, and turning to the left down
after the hedge against said [Gore?] LANGTON Esqrs lands in said parish
of Doynton, over into Rams Leaze, belonging to W.B. Esqr. in the tenure
of said [W.] TOGHILL and over into Bellows' also in the tenure of the [W.]
TOGHILL against [Gore?] LANGTON Esqrs lands and Nicholas
MANNING's.
Over into Park Leaze, also belonging to W.B. from thence into Park Leaze
also belonging to W.B. Esqr. and from thence into Park Leaze in the
possession of Charles BRYANT, keeping after the hedge and watercourse
against said Gore LANGTON's lands belonging to John TOGHILL, and
over the hedge, following the old water course at [H... Ham] up Dirham Lane, to
the corner from thence into Mill Croft after the hedge and watercourse against
said John TOGHILL's Lands to the said river and up after said river into
the Millcroft both belonging to said W.B. and in the tenure of William
NICHOLS and keeping up the said river against Gore LANGTON's boundary on the river and crossing the Mill brooke leading from the Mansion
House at Dirham, then leaving the said river, still keeping against said LANGTON's boundary over into lands called Black Pools, also belonging to said W.B. and in the tenure of said William NICHOLAS and after the hedge to the
said river again, and by the side of said river against Gore LANGTON's lands and the Charity lands left for the benefit of clergyman's wdows in the
parish of Doynton, from thence into Black Pool belonging to the said William
BLATHWAYT in the tenure of Charles BRYANT against said Charity Lands
over into Hills's belonging to said W. BLATHWAYT in the tenure of the
said Charles BRYANT, then leaving the river and keeping after said Charity
Lands over into Cadoes Ditch, belonging to said W.B. in the tenure also
of Charles BRYAN (sic) from thence into Cadoes Ditch belonging to the
Glebe of Dirham and against the said Charity Lands round to the river again;
and up said river against said Gore LANGTON's lands in the said parish
of Doynton to the back lane leading from Dirham to Pucklechurch. Then crossing
said river up the said lane against said Gore LANGTON's lands leaving
the lane in the parish of Dirham, up after Tobias FOX's Lands and from
thence into land belonging to the Chamber of Bristol when turning to the left
against said Tobias FOX's lands, we turned to the right by said lands
also belonging to the said Tobias FOX and the said Gore LANGTON in the said parish of Doynton over into Dirham Lower Field, when crossing the
end of Lutan's Lane keeping against lands belonging to [Mr/Mrs] JONES down said field, over into Redford belonging to said W BLATHWAYT in the
tenure of [George] TOGHILL and to the hedge where Pucklechurch parish
begins, when keeping against lands in that parish belonging to George
TOGHILL and The Earl of Radnor to the hedge where Wick and Abson parish
begins, against lands belonging to Alderman STEPHENS Charity down to
Feltams Brooke, against Pucklechurch parish, when turning to the right up after
said brooke against lands belonging to the Glebe of Pucklechurch and crossing
the end of the back lane, we went into Redford belonging to the Chamber of
Bristol and still keeping after the said brooke against lands belonging to the
said Glebe of Pucklechurch and lands belonging to Sir John Hugh SMYTH Bart. over into Dirham Lower Field and keeping after said brooke against said Sir
J H SMYTH's lands over into Field Leaze belonging to said W BLATHWAYT in the tenure of Thomas CREW as lessee of the premises up after said
brooke and against said Sir John Hugh SMYTH's lands into the Dirham
Lower Field, keeping after said brooke and after said lands belonging to Sir
J H SMYTH over into the Field Tyning belonging to the Chamber of Bristol
and from thence into Parkfield belonging to the said Wm. BLATHWAYT in
the possession of [Edwd] HATHWAY; then over into Great Filtam, belonging
to the Chamber of Bristol in the tenure of Stephen TOGHILL and after
said brooke against said Sir John Hugh SMYTH's lands and lands belonging
to the Earl of Radnor called [W... Moor over into the Turnpike Road
leading from Pucklechurch to [Chip....] to Filtam Bridge, crossing said road over
into Filtham belonging to said W.B. in the tenure of George TOGHILL,
and against lands in Pucklechurch belonging to the Dean and Chapter of Wells,
round after said brooke over into Filtam belonging to said W.B, in the
tenure of George TOGHILL and against said Earle of Radnor's lands
to the hedge where Westerly parish begins [?]. And after said brooke against
lands belonging to Samuel WORRALL Esqr., over into [Lander's] Mead, also
belonging to W. BLATHWAYT in the tenure of James PROUT, and after
said brooke against said Samuel WORRALL's [own] lands in Westerleigh,
into Bridewell belonging to said W BLATHWAYT in the tenure of Stephen
TOGHILL, and over into Bridewell belonging to the Corporation of Bristol in
the tenure of said Stephen TOGHILL and then over into Bridewell
belonging to the Chamber of Bristol in the tenure of Robert CLARKE and
then against said Samuel WORRALL's Lands up to the hedge where the
Manors of Dirham and Hinton, Westerly and Wapley and Codrington meet, when
leaving the brooke and turning to the right after the hedge and against lands
in said parish of Wapley and Codrington belonging to Sir Charles BAMPFIELD
Baronet, over into [Benbows] Lane and up the left hand side of said lane
against lands in Wapley and Codrington belonging to said Sir Charles
BAMPFLYDE to the lane leading to Westerly, Wapley & Codrington, Dirham
and Hinton; where we finished our first days perambulation and adjourned to the
Bull at Hinton kept [by] Jeffery MATHEWS to dinner.
Wednesday, 3rd October
We began our 2nd day's perambulation at the said Cross Lanes, from
whence we proceeded along Avern Hill. After the left hand hedge against lands
in Wapley and Codrington, belonging to Sir Charles BAMPFYLDE, Bart., and
by a Maiden oak and two Maiden Ashes growing in said lane belonging to said W.B. to the end of the lane into a field called Avern Hill belonging to said W.B. in the tenure of Robert TOGHILL and after the hedge against the bounds
of Sir Charles BAMPFLYDE's lands crossing a Bridle road leading to
Sodbury Borough, through Codrington after the hedge over into Mickle Mead,
belonging to Stephen TOGHILL as lessee to said W.B. and against Sir
C BAM.' Lands over into a Fatting Barton, and after the hedge along
Brookwell belonging to said W. B. leased to said Stephen TOGHILL over the brooke into Stony [Cox/Lee's] Mead belonging to said W.B. in
the tenure of John ANSTEE.
Then following the water course of the brooke/[Astone] a little distance from
the hedge against said Sir C. BAMPFYLDE's land, over into Bull Downs
belonging to Said W BLATHWAYT, in the tenure of Samuel BRYANT late of Stephen TOGHILL as tenant into Ridgy Mead belonging to the
Chamber of Bristol in the tenure of George ANSTEE and after the same
brooke against said Sir Charles BAMPFYLDE's lands into Great Withy Down
in the tenure of Thomas CREW, belonging to the Chamber of Bristol and
after the brooke into John WEST's Marsh belonging to the said W.B. over into a little marsh belonging to said W.B., in the holding of John
NICHOLAS and into the marsh belonging to the said Chamber also in the
possession of the said John NICHOLAS, from thence into the marsh
belonging to the said Chamber in the occupation of Jeffery MATHEWS, from
thence into the marsh belonging to the said W.B. in the possession of Robert
TOGHILL. Whence we left the brooke and turned to the right hand after the
hedge against said Sir Charles BAMPFYLDE's lands to the next hedge, when
we turned short to the left in the marsh belonging to the said Chamber of
Bristol in the tenure of Thomas CREW, and crossing the end of an old
lane called Holloway, into Great Holloway, belonging to said W.B. in the
possession of Robert TOGHILL, over into Dirham Upper Field, still
keeping against said Sir Charles BAMPFYLDE's lands in Wapley and
Codrington, turning to the left into Grabb Tree corner to a gate leading to
Codrington and up the road against the bounds of said Sir Charles
BAMPFYLDE's lands to Bacon Lane, keeping up said lane after the right hand
wall against Dirham Upper Field and to the corner where we began our
perambulation yesterday on the Turnpike road leading from Cross Hands aforesaid
to Bath.
