Overview
by MarshaThere are a few LEWIS families in/around Bitton from the mid 1700s. We found one marriage 1742; one 1750; then four marriages 1761 - 1764. There are baptisms for children of a John, 1744 - 1756, but John is not one of the marriages and is not yet identified. The occupations, where noted, are: butcher, farmer, carpenter, labourer.
We can identify one line, that of Isaac/Sarah, from their marriage in 1764; their children (bap 1764 - 1782) and grandchildren (bap 1795 - abt 1830). We do not know of Isaac's origins.
One family cluster is that of Daniel/Mary Ann, whose children were bap 1814 - 1823. From what we've learned from another researcher, this Daniel came from Cold Ashton. We do not know if/how he may be related to the other Bitton LEWIS families.
Of curiosity is the fact that part of the BUSH/BUSHE family settled in Cold Ashton; a Samuel BUSH was a marriage witness for Isaac/Sarah in 1764. Also, Thomas Thompson BUSH was m. to a Fanny LEWIS, b. abt 1798, Cold Ashton.
The name seems to decline in the area after about 1850.

Our earliest is Isaac (abt 1739 - 1788) who m. Sarah (nee NAISH), 1764, Bitton (witnesses John NAISH, Samuel [x] BUSH). Their son Robert (1766 - 1800) m. Mary (nee THOMPSON), 1794, Publow. Robert/Mary's daughter, Rachel (1797 - 1838), m. John MEERE, 1818, Bitton. John/Rachel are Marsha's ancestors.
Robert's brother, Isaac, was also m. to a Mary. They are Margaret's ancestors. We were very surprised to learn that Mary, widow of Robert was also Mary, wife of Isaac!
Rachel (bap 1813, d/o Thomas/Mary Ann; Thomas a son of Isaac/Sarah) m. William THOMPSON (of the Bitton families)
