On the road between Stanton Drew and Chew Magna, on a little triangular
island at a T-junction is the Round House, which is actually hexagonal.
It
was once a toll house, and there is a hook near the front door for the pouch
which coach drivers put their toll money in.
The Toll House Keepers shown in the census returns as living here in 1851 were -
Thomas BURRIDGE, 24, Labourer, Stanton Drew, Som.
and
Ann, 23, West Harptree, Som.
and 1871, Thomas BURRIDGE (coachman) and his wife Ann (collector).

The Toll House at Stanton Drew in the early part of the last century.
Matt submitted these two photos of the Toll House at Stanton Drew from the 1930s, when his Ggrandfather, Frederick RICH lived there.
He's interested in learning more about the Toll House. If anyone has any further information on the Toll House please contact Matt.
Frederick RICH apparently lived there during the time he worked for JS Fry and Son, from 1896 to the 1940s. |
