15th August 1823 the will of John OLDS late of Bitton (proved).
(This is heavy reading since they were not keen to put in punctuation; if they could say something once it had to be repeated several times!!!)

In the name of God Amen I John OLDS of the Hamlet of Oldland in the Parish of Bitton and County of Gloucester Cooper being of a sound mind memory and understanding thanks be given to Allmighty [sic] God for the same but considering the frailty of this mortal life the certainty of death and the uncertainty there of when, and being willing and desirous to settle things in order, do make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say, first I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator hoping to be saved by the alone merits of my only Saviour and redeemer Jesus Christ, my body I commend to the earth to be intered at the discretion of my executor herein afternamed, and as for my wordley [sic] goods and property, which the Allmighty [sic] hath been pleased to bless me with, I shall hereafter name, but first my will is that all my debts be collected in and all my just debts paid, with my funeral expences [sic] and proving this my wills, and then as follows, and

first I give and bequeath unto my daughter Hannah BRIGHT the sum of one hundread [sic] pounds, of lawfull[sic] money of Great Britain, I also give and bequeath unto my son William OLDS the sum of one hundread [sic] pounds of lawfull [sic] money of Great Britain, I also give and bequeath unto my son James OLDS the sum of one hundread [sic] pounds of lawfull [sic] money of Great Britain, I also give and bequeath unto my son John OLDS the sum of fifty pounds of lawfull [sic] money of Great Britain, I also give and bequeath unto my son Jonathan OLDS the sum of seventy pounds of lawful money of GreatBritain,

I also give and bequeath unto my son Jonas OLDS the house that I now live in with the garden stable and out houses and pigsty and all the premises thereto belonging during his natural life, and after his decease I give the said house garden stable outhouses and pigstyes [sic] and all the premises thereto belonging unto my surviveing [sic] children as before named as shall be liveing [sic] at the time of his decease to be divided between them each share and share alike and if but one child be liveing [sic] the whole to that child, be it son or daughter

I also give and bequeath unto my son Jonas OLDS all my household goods and furnature[sic] of every kind and description whatsoever and also all my coopers timber of every sort and all my other timber of every kind whatsoever as well without doors as within doors and also all my coopers tools of every sort and kind whatsoever and also all my hoops of every sort whatsoever for his use and disposall [sic] and my will is that all the legacies being paid within twelve months after my decease

and I do hereby nominate and appoint my son Jonas OLDS to be my hole [sic] and sole executor of this my last will and testament avoiding and revokeing [sic] all other will or wills heretofore made by me at time heretofore and I do hereby declare this to be my last will and testament, and in the presence of them who have subscribed their names as witnesses and in the presence of each other this twenty day of December and in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifteen signed sealed published and declared by the said testator John OLDS as for his last will and testament in the presence of us who haveing [sic] signed our names hereunto as witnesses the sixteen day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventeen.

Witnessed by: George BAILEY, Robert BRITTON and ? Thomas. John also signed his name.

John made a codicil to his will on the 31st August 1818:

I John OLDS of the hamlett [sic] of Oldland in the parish of Bitton in the county of Gloucester cooper being of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding do make and ordain this to be a codicil to my last will and testament dated the seventeenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventeen in manner following (that is to say) I give devise and bequeath unto my affectionate son Jonas OLDS all that my plot piece or parcel of meadow or pasture ground now in my own occupation containing by estimation one acre or thereabouts to the same more or less situate lying and being in the common field in the hamlet of Hanham in the parish of Bitton in the county of Gloucester aforesaid called West field with all and every the rights members advantages and appurtances whatsoever to the same plot piece or parcel of ground belonging or in anywise appertaining on to or with the same or anypart thereof held used occupied or enjoyed. To hold the same and every part and parcel thereof unto my said son Jonas OLDS his heirs and assigns to and for the only proper use and behoof of him my said son Jonas OLDS his heirs and assigns forever and to an for no other use trust intent or purpose whatsoever. And I do in all other respects hereby ratify and confirm my said will and declare this to be a codicil thereto and a part thereof.

In witness whereof I the said John OLDS have to this codicil to my said last will and testament set my hand and seal this thirty first day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen.

Signed sealed published and declared by the testator John OLDS as and to be a codicil to his last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presence at his request and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses to the due execution hereof: Jno LEWTON, Sarah THOMPSON, Hugh CHALLICOM
